Center

The important part for me is that I’ve been living in this city, Szczecin, for over 40 years and that this city is a basic reference in creating my own theatre and in doing what my own theatre surpasses. A human always lives in a designated place, breathes with this place. And they always feel somehow obligated towards this place…

Zygmunt Duczyński

Independent Theatrical Center is located by pl. Piotra i Pawła 4/5 street in Szczecin since 1994. It was founded by Zygmunt Duczyński whose cultural actions since the beginning of Kana (1979) have been oriented on – as he was saying – “more than self theatre” and “bringing back the presence”, on presenting important events and authors of searching theatres in Szczecin, and on broadly understood, informal, cultural-artistic education (before Kana received its place, the projects called “Ośrodek Misteria” were held in Szczecin’s student clubs).

Center was led by Kana Theatre Assembly (whose activity allowed creating substantive structure and organization of the Center) until 2006, from 2007 it has a status of cultural institution. Currently it is led by perennial coworkers of Zygmunt Duczyński. They establish Program Board, who develop the jointly built program line in an authoritative way.

Center is a base for various plays, artistic actions, festivals, cultural, social, educational, and exploratory projects. Annually, it organizes around 80 cultural events inviting artists from all around the world, builds international network, is active in the area, performs an integrational, educational, and promotional function for young theatre groups from Pomeranian voivodeship. The Center also hosts residency projects.
