Marcin Brzozowski’s performance
2016 was my Kurdish year. That year in May, after years of waiting for a safe moment and a long process of preparation, I found myself in Kurdistan. It was possible thanks to the support of Sihad and Arian Khalil, two Kurds living in Łódź, who took care of my stay and security there. The documentation of the expedition was to be used as a material to create the script of a theatre performance focused on the path to independence of Iraqi Kurdistan. The video material I recorded using an amateur camera is over ten hour long. Shocking nature of most of these recordings as well as abundance of material forced me to quit the plans of staging; I decided to let the Kurds tell their story. As a result, I created a video-report showing live of habitants of Iraqi Kurdistan on the eve of independence, with elements of – so to speak – heroic tragicomedy performed by me.
