The False David - WINDOW 2019

Okno – Close Encounters. The Kana’s Voices. Duration: 747 min. (?)

"The False David" is neither a hero nor a warrior. Rather, he comes from the shadow of our being. From a place where the pain of giving birth is reflected in an infinite echo. Hence, where ascent means fall, where joy drowns in pain, where death embraces life. Peace is found in eternal returns.

The original performance of Imre Thormann which we will see in the Kana Theatre is a symbolic return. Its score (structure, outline, inner story) was created more than twenty years ago and was shown in Szczecin, on the Kana stage in 1999 (during the Ex ... it! festival).

Younger Imre Thormann walked directly towards the audience, and the silence was torn by the wild, innervated, cacophony of sounds interdependent with the dancer’s motions – improvised by the singer’s voice and rough, jarring sounds of the cello “whipped” with the bow. Twenty years later, Thormann moves in a circle closed with light – with much greater focus, reduction, with energy liberated from many tensions, with the consent to a pause, a breath and silence – also to the story about weakness of the body, still an extremely fit. The dancer’s motion is accompanied by a minimalist, raw but also warm sound of the clarinet. Sometimes gentle softness sneaks in the structure replacing twitches. The dances seems to evoke himself – from the past, yet with today’s self-awareness. Peace is found in eternal returns.

Imre Thormann is a dancer, choreographer, unusual personality and exceptional teacher. He studied various martial arts (taekwondo, tai chi) and the Alexander’s Technique. For 13 years he lived in Tokyo, where he participated in the classes of Michizo Noguchi and butoh dance led by legendary Kazuo Ohno. Since 1993, he has been performing in butoh productions in Japan, Europe and the USA. He currently lives, dances and teaches in Molieres (France).
