THE FOURTH DAY
The fourth day (June 26) is a report of a nightmare that has come true. The captivity shown in the performance "EMDR" is a theatrical document touching one of the most traumatic situations faced by a man: war, imprisonment, interrogation, genuine threat of loss of life. The account of trauma and the attempt to come to terms with it is a kind of report of an inner catastrophe, after which nothing is the same anymore.
EMDR (eyes, movement, donbas, renegade)
Paweł Jurow, a Ukrainian theatre director, and a participant of the Maidan, immediately after the invasion of „green men“ in eastern Ukraine, went to his homeland to see for himself what the situation described in the media looks like. This seemingly innocent journey quickly turns into a scenario of a thriller, which ends happily only after two months: the president‘s plane brings him to Kiev, everyone involved in the negotiations are happy because of the release abductees. The stories of many people involved in armed conflict often end up in such a way: apparently, everything is all right – „success: we‘re alive" – but the trauma of events remains for a long time. Introspection of Yurov is based on several years of struggling with traumatic experiences and reaching the point where it is finally possible to liberate oneself from them. Thanks to his sensitivity, perseverance in pursuing his goal and talent in vivid depiction of the situation, we will be able to look at the path he has taken. But do not expect a „sorrowful and tragic tale, similar to many other stories“. Life is rarely monochromatic: the story of Yurov is full of fast-pace scenes and vivid characters, it is also filled with bright, humorous moments. Thanks to this honest, personal perspective, it is easier to see what is largely a collective experience of our eastern neighbors.
Five years ago, Yurov and Turkowski met in Lublin, where during the „Konfrontacje“ Festival the first version of the story about the experience of the Donbas was created. A year later, their paths crossed in Toronto, where as part of the "Progress" festival there was a meeting with writer Johnathan Garfinkel, with whom Pavel created a second, even more personal version of the text. In the same year 2015 he came to Szczecin and in cooperation with the actors from the Kana Theatre and the Współczesny Theatre organizated a moving event of public reading of his text "Donbas. A hollow country. "
Now, during this year‘s Bonds of Culture Festival, the Kana Theatre will be the producer of the stage version of the performance, which will premiere on June 26. Will be issued in English, with translation into Polish in subtitles.
This performance is a journey of liberation from the external influences and people in power. Liberation from own limitations and established reactions. Liberation from the memories about all of that. It manifests through confrontation against the circumstances of a town of Sloviansk in Donbas, occupied by pro-Russian separatists and Russian combatants in spring of 2014.
The character of the performer has launched himself onto a mission of engagement into the process of taking care about his homeland once there appears an outside threat for the closest ones, and for the democratic future of the region in general. He is met with hostility of the locals, guns of the almost uncontrollable separatists, and long hours of intense and desperate feelings of misery. Then he discovers that his humour, dignity, patience and faith are able to provide ground to hold on to.
Would he be capable to fight the fears and the watchmen, and not only escape the captivity, but breathe freely ever after, and start hearing and accepting himself as he is? In order to follow own agenda and ever expanding life goals.
