THE SIXTH DAY
The sixth day (June 28) is the day of the reverse Carnival, the surprising modern Dionysia – the more immersed in the element of play more, the more painfully touching the memory of the time of the Passage. The Russian theatre Akhe at every level of its activities creates an alternative reality – absurd, comical and tragic, at the same time nostalgic and distanced. And in the evening – THE MUSICAL GRAND FINALE, straight from Arizona.
Democracy
If someone wanted to create a portrait of our epoch, it would be an oil painting. Oil is inextricably linked to the victorious maxim of the 20th century – democracy. But what will be its equivalent in the coming century; what will emerge from the global deluge of terms, concepts and issues? AKHE cause the barrels to spill over and they literally dive into the viscous black mixture. With knives, sponges made of bread and sticky graffiti, they celebrate the harsh swansong of a world order as we know it.
AKHE is one of Russia’s most renowned artists’ collectives. They ironically describe their performances – which are brimming with strange objects and allusions to art – as “engineering theatre”. In recent years they have produced several commissioned works and have been involved in various co-productions with renowned event organisers (incl. Berliner Festspiele, Kampnagel Hamburg and FIDENA Bochum). UNIDRAM has presented almost all of their productions to date.
