Decarbonization

Decarbonization

performative action
directed by Olesya Nezhywa

Carbon is a substance of fragments, just like the collective human memory. Coal is produced by a carbonization process that turns plant fragments into peat. This process is not much different from the process of shaping long-term memory in people and society - the so-called. transition from short-term memory to long-term memory. The process of memory consolidation can be considered similar to the carbonization process - separate stories and memories create a long-term memory of an event.

Thus, the fossil becomes an archive of memory rather than a fossil fuel.

We study cultural memory in a similar way. We extract individual quotes, writings, inscriptions, texts, which after analysis become texts of memory, texts of art.

What connects a miner and a ballerina? Does the miner have something of an ancient hero? And his lungs, are they like the lungs of Londoners in 1952?
