5 CLOSED STREET

5 CLOSED STREET

The project named "10 ważnych opowieści" ["10 important tales"] was a series of art therapy workshops participated by the residents of the homeless shelter FENIKS during which we verified the imaginations and stereotypes about homelessness. We answered questions asked by people "from the outside": those who have their own apartments, health insurances and a monthly salaries. We created the world according to a jointly constructed scenario. The matter of film let us record events taking place within the "movie crew", consisting partially of homeless people. The movie also boldly asks a few questions.

Driving from Police to Szczecin once I noticed quite an interesting billboard. I advertised not a "shelter for dogs" but "a hotel for dogs". It seems to me that our place should not be called "shelter". Why? Because the name "shelter" brings associations with poor people, with losers, or even with animals . . . The success of a place is founded on a good name!

To some extent it’s some kind of fun. Yet this fun can show the image of life in this shelter.

No, this is not a comedy, you cannot make comedy here. Here everyone is withdrawn. But we do not want to make drama out of it, we just want to show how we strive to get out of here!

The movie . . . is a surprise to me. First of all, this is something new.

I think we’ve got two movies here. The first is the one we observe and record. One can say that there are shots taken from life. The other one is edited a little bit. This is how the truth of the local existence comes out.

But what is this film about?
About us!
Well, about the homeless, kind of . . .

If an animal escapes from its cage, only hunger may force it to return. Meeting an animal of the same species can be dangerous to the one kept in captivity.
