Virtual Song Archive

Virtual Song Archive

As part of the scholarship of the Minister of Culture obtained in 2020 by Rafał Foremski, the "Virtual Song Archive" was created. The archive is a synthesis of over 10 years of experience, includes several dozen audio and video recordings made during several trips to the so-called Polish villages in Bukovina Rumuńska (where for 200 years the descendants of settlers keep customs and an interesting variety of language), in the Moldavian Styrcza and Transnistrian Svoboda Raszków (where, despite the disappearance of the language, the inhabitants still pray and sing in Polish).

In these rather hermetic, isolated communities, a very interesting, rich repertoire of secular and religious songs has been preserved, often sung in old "slow" variants, with a polyphony characteristic of these areas and rare in the Polish tradition.

The archive also includes eight documentary films made as part of the series "In search of songs for Puste Noce" - records of meetings with Pomeranian funeral singers.

We hope that the collection of songs presented on the website will be of service to musicians, researchers and anyone interested in Polish traditional culture, and over time will also become an important testimony for the inhabitants of the visited areas.
