Commune AI

Commune AI

What is it like to live in a collective with artificial intelligence? The Berlin group Interrobang posed this question last year in their interactive live format at HAU4. In the further development, communities are now being established once again in the digital space, including new features.

COMMUNE AI is a two-hour participatory online performance in which an international audience comes together to jointly establish an online commune and experiment with co-living with artificial intelligences. During the performance various AIs act as digital roommates, moderators, and mediators in a process of playful approach between peo-ple who have never met before.

COMMUNE AI artistically examines practices of hybrid social communities whereby the title – as well as metaphors of ‘living together’ used in the piece – stand for a lived (temporary) community during the performance in which physical bodies, spaces and intelligences meet digital bodies, spaces and intelligences. For this project, Interrobang has developed a unique online platform together with creative coders. The platform is easily accessible via any web browser. All participants meet simultaneously  on COMMUNE AI and are then divided into different small groups of communities by the platform algorithm. In their respective communities the online audience can communicate and interact with various AI tools. With the help of white-boards, notepads, pictures, emojis, chats and chatbots, the participants get in touch with each other without ever being visible to each other via webcam. In this way, they create a shared “living space” at the intersection of imaginary, virtual and physical reality.
